Research Masters and Doctorates

Postgraduate Research at the University of New South Wales

Interested in doing a postgraduate research? Then consider doing a Masters or Doctorate at the University of New South Wales. The Faculty of Engineering has a page detailing why you should pursue engineering research at UNSW.

Scholarships are available form many sources, including Government, Industry and The University. Individual staff advertise scholarships from time to time here. Scholarships marked with an * require the candidate to undertake tutorial commitments.

Listed below are details of the most common types available to permanent residents of Australia, or citizens of Australia or New Zealand:

Australian Postgraduate Award
A highly competitive government scholarship.
1st Class honours are generally required.
$16,000 tax free PLUS $8000*

Australian Postgraduate Award (Industry)
A co-operative government-industry scholarship.
$20,000 tax free PLUS $4000*

Faculty of Engineering Scholarship
Eligibility - Hons 2(1) or above.
Two per year are awarded to the School $16,000 tax free PLUS $8000*

Women in Engineering Scholarship
The Faculty awards one per year.
$16,000 tax free PLUS $8000*

School Scholarships
Are awarded on an yearly basis. Students are expected to be highly competitive for an APA in second year.
$10,000 tax free PLUS $5000*


The Australian Government provides a range of Scholarships for outstanding overseas postgraduate research students. They are:

The Australian Development Scholarship (ADS) is funded by AusAID and provides scholarships for students from certain developing countries, including China, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Uganda, Kenya and Nigeria.

Students wishing to apply for ADS should write immediately to the Australian Diplomatic Post (or Australian Education Centre) in their home country and request an application. Some countries initial applications will close in early March. The letter should include details of previous and proposed study. Applications are not available from the University.


International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) assistance may be available to students wishing to undertake a Masters by research or a PhD. Students from all countries, except Australia and New Zealand, may apply. IPRS covers course fees only. Applications are available from the University.
