Attendance The rules governing the attendance of classes are described in the following website - https://my.unsw.edu.au/student/atoz/AttendanceAbsence.html. Students are expected to be regular and punctual in attendance in all classes. If students attend less than eighty percent of the classes they may be refused final assessment in that subject. Written Assignments The length and format of a given assignment must conform to the requirements of a given subject. The assignments must be submitted by the relevant deadlines; otherwise a penalty described in the relevant Course Summary will apply. All written assignments should include a copy of the student declaration coversheet. Students are responsible for taking reasonable precautions to avoid losing valuable items. For example, copy of a thesis or other papers unique to one student should not be left unattended or outside the toilets; computer disk files should be backed up and kept in a different place from the main copy. Assessment The details of assessment for a given subject are outlined in the given Course Summary. Examinations The details of an examination applicable to a given subject are outlined in the given Course Summary. Follow-up examinations, or extra examinations granted due to medical considerations will all be held: 1. After session 1, during the last week of recess 2. After session 2, from 14 to 18 December Each session, the University Examination Timetable is distributed which is posted on the examination website. The time set for an examination, including those held by the School during session, is the time when all students sit. Exception is given to where “reasons are beyond your control or in cases of serious illness “, otherwise there is no question of an extension of time so that you can sit later. Please check special consideration rules below. MISREADING THE TIMETABLE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AS A REASON FOR FAILING TO ATTEND AN EXAMINATION.
Rules for Computer Tests Any individual course may have its own rules which are in addition to or replace these general rules. The details will be in the Course Home Page and the Initial Handout for the course. The dates for computing tests are announced in the Course Home Page and the Initial Handout for the course. These will not be changed (except in exceptional circumstances) without the approval of the class. It is not normal for there to be additional tests provided for students who miss a computing test. See the special consideration rules below for more information on what to do if you suffer illness or misadventure. All computing tests are held under UNSW exam conditions, please check this website https://my.unsw.edu.au/student/academiclife/assessment/examinations/examinationrules.html.
In addition, Only students who are booked for the particular computing test session will be allowed to sit the test at that time. The student will sit the test in the ChSE Computing Lab under exam conditions. Student cards must be clearly visible at all times. No writing materials are allowed unless specified. Only a file (or files) of the designated name(s) will be accepted and the last such file(s) saved by the student will be the only one(s) marked. At the end of the test, all typing shall cease. Please check examinations website https://my.unsw.edu.au/student/academiclife/assessment/examinations/examinationrules.html for further details. Advice to Students on Course Progression The general policy of the School is to encourage students in developing a positive attitude to their studies and accepting responsibility for their actions. The overall aim should be to "achieve the desired results", despite difficulties that might arise from time to time, rather than continually looking for excuses. You should plan your time and try avoiding doing things at the last minute. You should make allowance for possibilities like a day or two of sickness or similar events. Requests for Special Consideration due to Illness or Misadventure If the policies of the School of ChSE in any way conflict with any University policy, then the University policy applies.
On some occasions, sickness, misadventure, or other circumstances beyond your control may prevent you from completing a course requirement or attending or submitting assessable work for a course. Such assessable requirements may include formal end of session examination, class test, laboratory test, seminar presentation, etc. It is also possible that such situations may significantly affect your performance in an assessable task. The University has procedures that allow you to apply for consideration for the affected assessments. Depending on the circumstances, the University may take action to allow you to overcome the disadvantage. You should note that merely submitting a request for Special Consideration does not automatically mean that you will be granted additional assessment, nor that you will be awarded an amended result. For example, if you have a poor record of attendance or performance throughout a session/year in a course you may be failed regardless of illness or other reason affecting a final examination in that course. The University has a centralised procedure for Special Consideration applications. Many course authorities and faculties have 'local' procedures that you will also need to follow. Please check the following website - https://my.unsw.edu.au/student/academiclife/assessment/AssessmentPolicySec4.html Academic Misconduct Procedures
Specific examples of Academic misconduct are Plagiarism and Unauthorised materials in exams Academic misconduct procedures are outlined here https://my.unsw.edu.au/student/academiclife/assessment/AcademicMisconductStudentMisconduct.html and the Student Guide. Equity The School is committed to providing an educational environment that is free from discrimination and harassment, in accordance with University policies on Student Equity and Equal Opportunity in Education, which are stated in https://my.unsw.edu.au/student/atoz/EqualOpportunity.html Students can seek assistance to get disputes resolved from the following sources: Senior Academic Staff, Course Co-ordinators, School Grievance Officer, Head of School, Student Equity Unit, Student Guild Advocacy Service, and Equal Opportunity Employment Unit. |
